ARTIST STATEMENT
THE MELODY OF A LANDSCAPE
This project explores and experiments with the idea that an image has its own unique melody, and conversely that a musical score can also carry visual meaning. I began experimenting with a simple setup in which I use a music box to play perforation drawings that act as a scores.
Each painting/score is a visual and audible translation of a space that I’ve experienced directly. This series evolves with every new place that I travel to and together they become a polyphonic illustration of all the spaces I inhabited. At each location I take unique features of the local landscape and convert them into images that can be listened to.
I look at this as a translation project, one that reveals an unexpected synchronicity not only between visual and audible perception, but also between nature and culture. Through a cumulative process, each musical drawing contributes to the meta-polyphony that nature and culture can generate at one point in space.
The work has also an interactive aspect, as viewers are invited to play each painting. Each strip of paper can be played in 4 different ways (forwards, backwards, forward flipped and backwards flipped) resulting in 4 unique musical pieces. Multiple participants may find themselves interpreters in an impromptu polyphonic composition.

This project has a surreal ambiance about it and reminds me of Alice Through the Looking Glass. I have heard there are people out there who see color or taste sound (synethsesia) which also seems like a relevant reference point. The paintings are provincial landscapes, delicate and intimate, dream-like. They recreate the experience of looking over a valley and onto a distant mountaintop where everything is tiny and imaginary looking, even though it's technically right in front of you. The idea that you can play a painting by turning a crank is wonderful, like pulling something out of nothing. Jack and the Beanstalk, the Pied Piper, somehow all are implied here. Above all, this idea evokes the imagination in a terrific way because if a painting can play music the next thing to ask is 'what else can it do?' and the possibilities of course are endless. reviewed by Dan Peyton for ArtVetting on Wednesday, May 01, 2025
At first glimpse these engaging works appear to be the result of a project with Mrs. Hancock’s’ third grade art class or a cottage industry in a remote cloud-shrouded Alpine valley. The plunk and plink of the music boxes would mingle with the cowbells as they returned from the high meadow for milking. They have a sweetness and simplicity that belies their complexity. Part of this comes from the disingenuous display, the intimate scale, an old table, the photograph of the class during nap time (which turns out to be serious art lovers listening to the vibrations through the table). Also the landscapes that are super wide screen display a bucolic charm that because of that charm some would be reluctant to engage with.Further research reveals your work with photo-luminescent paint and other sylvan endeavors that are seriously environmental. So what appears to be simple is not. Not a bad thing at all. But are there ways to have different music boxes that are tuned to the specific paintings at hand? Perhaps different parts of the tonal scale would evoke differing landscapes and times of day or night?
I would love to see a huge music box, once the high point of repeatable music technology before Edison came along, and large paintings with dozens of sets of punched holes. You are on the right path. This is a rich source of potent images and sounds, a synthesis that is classic yet timely.
